Why Angela Looks So Amazing on Mr. Robot This Season

Why Angela Looks So Amazing on Mr. Robot This Season (It Has to Do With Tilda Swinton)

Mr. Robot is not known for its fashion (sorry, Sam Esmail). Sure, Rami Malek’s black hoodie is as important to the show as Elliot Alderson himself (as faithful viewers know), but let’s be real, the hacker drama is no techie version of Sex and the City.

Except for… Angela Moss.

In season two, the AllSafe employee-turned-E Corp rising star (portrayed by Portia Doubleday) is bringing all sorts of sartorial savviness to the show, using her fashion choices to show that (a) she’s newly loaded and (b) you better take her seriously. It’s a pretty obvious departure from season one, too — this time she’s got enough beautiful blouses, slick blazers and tailored trousers to make any J.P. Morgan first-year jealous.

So, where are all of these new clothes coming from? That would be the result of a lot of hard work by costume designer Catherine Marie Thomas, who joined the series for season two. “We felt really strongly that at the office we wanted her to be this very no-nonsense sort of masculine, strong character,” Thomas tells PeopleStyle. “So what we wanted to do was take menswear and make it this empowering, feminine armor.” Oh, and she did that, all right.

Portia Talks Season 2 of “Mr. Robot”

Portia Talks Season 2 of “Mr. Robot”

Portia Doubleday on Season 2 of Mr. Robot: “People Will Be Shocked”

The actress talks season 2 of the Golden Globe-winning hacker drama, and the harrowing time she got hacked IRL.

On Sunday night, the cast of the Golden Globes-winning hacker drama Mr. Robot gathered in New York, where they are still wrapping up production on the second season, to hack the traditional TV launch. Inside the West Chelsea concept store Story, the windows of which had been mysteriously papered over, they revealed a line of Mr. Robot merch (you can buy the black hoodie that has become Rami Malek’s second skin). Minutes later, at 8:30 p.m., the first half of the two-episode season premiere (it aired last night on USA) dropped with no advance warning on Twitter, followed by Snapchat, Youtube, and finally the USA website.

The stunt may have felt more like an idea that plays better in a marketing meeting than it does online, but it’s the latest example of the show’s unusually high engagement and credibility with the Internet and the hacking community (Wired called it “the best hacking show yet”). The Internet, of course, likes to return the favor.

Mr. Robot: Portia is Here for Your Angela and Elliot Theories

Mr. Robot: Portia Doubleday Is Here for Your Angela and Elliot Theories

Her character takes a much darker turn in Season 2, but Doubleday is still happy to discuss Redditor theories about Angela and Elliot’s past.

Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek) wasn’t the only one whose life imploded during Season 1 of USA’s engrossing show Mr. Robot—a hacker drama filled with eerie parallels to the real world. His childhood friend Angela Moss, played by Portia Doubleday, was forced to alter the course of her own destiny when she realized that trying to climb the ladder in corporate America wasn’t a sure path to happiness and success—and neither was her long-term relationship with her cheating boyfriend Ollie (Ben Rappaport). While Elliot and the members of hacker collective fsociety took down nefarious global conglomerate E Corp from the outside, Angela made the controversial decision to start working there. It’s a choice that’s even harder to believe given that this is also the corporation responsible for the deaths of her mother and Elliot’s father.

Doubleday promises that we’ll see a changed Angela when the series returns Wednesday for Season 2, although it might be hard to discern whether or not she’s still “one of the good ones,” as Elliot once said.
